 | | Martin Creek Lake State Park | Location: Henderson is located in the Piney Woods of East Texas, 150 miles east of Dallas, 175 miles north of Houston, and 75 miles west of Shreveport Louisiana.
History: Established in 1843, Henderson was named after the first Governor of the State of Texas, James Pickney Henderson. The county's economic foundation was agriculture throughout a period of almost a hundred years before a new era dawned with the discovery of oil in 1930.
Recreation: Nine area lakes provide fishing areas and water sports. The Expo Center is the site of rodeos along with related activities. Ball fields, soccer fields, a basketball pavilion, picnic tables and an indoor gym are found in the Rusk County Recreation Center. Lake Forest Park includes a swimming pool, lake fishing, playground, and jogging trails. Two golf courses, and a tennis court are also located within the city.
