Hill Country Paradise

KERRVILLE, TEXAS.  Charming shops and cafes await you in the quaint, historical downtown district.  Small, winding country lanes that follow the flow of the Guadalupe, lined with generations-old cypress and oak trees, offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a leisurely afternoon drive. An impressive collection of galleries, museums, wineries, martini bars, studios, theaters and showrooms, as well as a number of other cultural settings, makes Kerrville the foremost destination for a weekend or a lifetime in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

One of the larger of the hill country towns, Kerrville still has that small town feel and ambiance that welcomes you and invites you to stay awhile.  Rich in history, but modern in its conveniences, Kerrville seems to have something for everyone.

Nature. Take a relaxing stroll through the gardens of Riverside Nature Center, and enjoy the native gardens and abundant butterflies while making your way down the path that leads to a gorgeous walk along the Guadalupe River.  If you prefer hiking, canoeing, fishing, camping, kayaking or biking, Kerrville-Schreiner Park provides you with a number of trail options that will appeal to the beginner and the expert alike, as well as opportunity to rent any equipment that you would need for a memorable experience.  Kerrville is also home to three exceptional golf courses that even the most seasoned golfers enjoy. If you want a true “Texas” experience, the historic Y.O. Ranch is just the place for you.  It offers exotic wildlife tours that feature over fifty species of exotic game animals from all over the world; longhorn trail drives that visitors can participate in, or enjoy the beauty of the ranch by horseback, dine at the chuck wagon or relax and cool off by the pool. Birding is also a very popular pass time in Kerrville, due to the various species of birds which visit or are permanent residents.

Shopping.  Enchanting downtown shop windows are filled with items that seem to beckon visitors inside.  Once you walk through the doors, you can’t help but notice the architectural details that hint of another time.  Vintage surroundings seem to lend the perfect backdrop for the unique home goods, high end clothing, jewelry, and merchandise of Schreiner Goods, as well as the exotic draperies, fine linens and bedding that can be found at Country Chic.  Antiques, contemporary galleries, Cricket’s, resale shops, the Erica Rose Boutique, as well as a number of unique to the area stores, line the streets of Kerrville, with its old-world charm.  The famous silversmith, James Avery’s headquarters and campus is a must see when you’re in the area.  Browse their retail showroom, or sit outside on their patio and enjoy watching the wildlife that calls the compound home. Historic Old Ingram Loop, once an old west town complete with stage coach stop, is home to over two dozen shops, galleries, and dining. Art, Museums, and Culture. Kerrville has become a cultural mecca for artists of all genres. Music lovers have a number of opportunities throughout the year to enjoy and experience a variety of performances.  Every year, beginning Memorial Day weekend, thousands of visitors flock to Kerrville to enjoy eighteen straight days of music at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Labor Day weekend offers a three-day condensed version of the festival, coupled with wine-tasting, crafts, food and camping, at the Kerrville Fall Music Festival. The Symphony of the Hills delights patrons four times a year, and many of the local cafes, wineries and clubs are showcasing live music on the weekends.  The Kathleen C. Cailloux Theater, and Playhouse 2000 are sites of popular year-round performances, both theatrical as well as musical.  Branson Style Entertainment/Concerts, such as Mel Tillis, Michael Martin Murphy, and Ronnie Milsap, are frequent entertainment options for visitors and locals alike.  Art enthusiasts have several options, as well.  The Museum of Western Art showcases rotating collections of the nation’s most well-known western artists and celebrates the memories of the Old West.  Kerr Arts and Cultural Center (KACC) features paintings, jewelry, sculpture, drawings, ceramics, gourds, pottery, glass art and more, with new shows monthly. Kerrville is also home to a multitude of private galleries, such as River’s Edge Gallery, The Copper Cactus, and the Winters Gallery. A visitor favorite is The Coming King Prayer & Sculpture Prayer Garden, with its focal being the easily recognizable “Empty Cross.”  Schreiner Mansion, originally the home of Captain Charles Schreiner, offers museum visitors a glimpse at what life was like for an affluent family during Kerrville’s early days. The exhibits at the Hill Country Arts Foundation and the riverside setting of the Point Theater round out an enchanting cultural experience for  visitors. Kerrville’s Schreiner University adds another dynamic to the community with its fresh, contemporary and upbeat cultural concerts, exhibits and presentations.

Festivals.  There always seems to be something fun going on in Kerrville.  In addition to the annual festivals mentioned above, Kerrville plays host to a number of others, such as the Kerrville Festival of the Arts and the Texas Hill Country Wine & Brew Festival, which are held during Memorial Day weekend. People have the opportunity to try local wines, craft beers, specialty foods and listen to live music. Kerrville’s 4th on the River Festival is a fun-filled day of live music and celebration, ending with fireworks at dusk. Easter Fest & Cook-off on the River, the Easter Hill Country Bike Tour, KerrFest, the Kerrville Triathlon Festival, the Kerr County Fair, as well as The Return to Kerrville Fly-In are all crowd pleasers and draw thousands of visitors to our city annually.

Whether people come for the ambiance of the Texas Hill Country, the serenity of the Guadalupe River, the scenic drives, the shopping, entertainment venues, or the festivals they are sure to make memories that will last a life time, and without a doubt – make plans to return to Kerrville soon.
