Southern Brazoria County offers all this for a relaxing day's activities on our 21 miles of beaches nestled on the Gulf of Mexico, beaches that include Quintana Beach and Surfside Beach.

Wildlife viewing is excellent as well in this area, as the County is home to 80,000 acres of wildlife refuges, Sea Center Texas and the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, all open and free to the public, that will be sure to keep you entertained.

The Center for Arts & Sciences
The Center for Arts & Sciences
You will find music and other diversions at The Center for Arts & Sciences. The largest shell collection in the south can be found in the Museum of Natural Science, and in the Art Gallery there are beautiful paintings and sculptures featuring local artists. A gift shop is filled with souvenirs, books and clothing to provide something to remember your visit. In addition, theatrical productions are held at the Center Stages Theater on many evenings. Watch the stars and galaxies in the Planetarium and explore the Nature Trail.

Golf enthusiasts will be excited to know that many wonderful courses are located within fifty miles of Clute…the hub of Southern Brazoria County. Clute is also well known as the home of the "Great Texas Mosquito Festival," with Willie Manchew, the festival's mascot, standing 30 feet tall welcoming warm-blooded humans to the fun event. The Festival is held annually the last Thursday, Friday and Saturday in July.

For those of you who love birds, a visit to the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory is a must. The staff is ready and willing to show you the self-guided nature trails that meander through 36 acres on Buffalo Camp Bayou. There is a well-stocked nature store with books on birds and other wildlife, bird feeders, and much more.

"Gordon", a 250 pound grouper, finds his home in a large tank at Sea Center Texas. You can see him and many small hefty underwater creatures here, as Sea Center is a combination saltwater fish hatchery and aquarium. Sea Center also offers an array of souvenirs in their gift shop.

Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historical Park
For history buffs, Southern Brazoria County is a treasure trove. You will discover historic cemeteries, markers, plantations and museums located here. Touring the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historical Park is a must. Enjoy the guided tours, historic exhibits, interpretive trails, picnicking sites and much more. One-of-a-kind items are featured in the store, so you may shop 'til you drop here, and in many of the unique antique and specialty stores in and around the area.
