Brownwood, Texas
Feels Like Home
Brownwood is a favorite Hill Country destination; close enough to home, but far from ordinary. We are home to legendary barbeque, Coach Gordon Wood, Lake Brownwood, trophy hunting, historic sites, and live entertainment.
Brown County is a sportsman's paradise, with miles of rolling terrain filled with pecan trees, live oak and whitetail deer. Three golf courses and several shade-covered parks are also a delight to visitors and residents alike. Lake Brownwood, with almost 100 miles of shoreline, is located northwest of the city and offers activities such as water skiing, boating, swimming and fishing. Lake Brownwood State Park is a jewel of the Hill Country with 537 acres to camp, picnic, fish, hike, swim and bird watch. Family reunions, retreats and outdoor enthusiasts make Brownwood their home away from home in the lodges, retreat centers and camps around the Lake.
Over 50 special events occur in Brownwood each year ranging from the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit, Annual Brown County Rodeo, Bluegrass Festival, Heartland Hot Rod Run, Heart of Texas Quilt Show and signature "Brownwood Reunion Celebration" to name a few.
Eight museums tell the story of Texas and Brown County, including two new attractions, The Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum and the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions. The Lehnis Railroad Museum showcases miniature trains and a large collection of railway artifacts. It opened in the fall of 2007, and has regular special exhibits and activities including "Choo Choo Christmas." The Gordon Wood Hall of Champions opened in the spring of 2009, and showcases the "winningest" high school football coach, Gordon Wood. The Hall of Champions holds artifacts from Coach Wood's honorable career and highlights outstanding players and support coaching staff.
Brownwood is a focal point on the Way out Wineries Trail, the Texas Forts Trail, the Great Texas Wildlife Trail, and the Wildflower Trail. Historic Downtown is home to shopping, dining, the Brownwood Coliseum, restored Santa Fe Depot and Harvey House, and the Brownwood Visitor Center.
