Discover Texas History. Visit the San Jacinto Monument and Museum and discover the site where Texas won independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836. Rising 570 feet above flat coastal plain, the monument commemorates the Battle of San Jacinto. Across from the monument is the 95-year-old Battleship Texas, the last dreadnought in existence in the world.

Take a Walk Down Memory Lane- The Sylvan Beach Depot Museum, managed by the La Porte Bay Area Heritage Society, features historical photographs, artifacts, and information from La Porte’s colorful history as the “Coney Island of the South.” Museum is open every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on weekdays by appointment.
