34th Annual Harp & Shamrock Society 5K Run and Fitness Walk

Mar 11, 2017

The Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas (HSS) will hold its 34th annual Harp & Shamrock Society 5K Run & Fitness Walk at Lady Bird Johnson Park, 10700 Nacogdoches Road on Saturday, March 11, 2017. The race begins to the sound of bagpipes at 8:30 a.m. and ends with Beethoven Dance Band, Guinness on tap and food—including Irish pasta and Irish “bangers” (sausage). Participants and their pets are encouraged to be as green as possible and/or wear their ugliest kilts. New this year: Besides Guinness at the Finish, HSS is offering demonstrations of Irish Road Bowling from 9:15 – 9:45, with awards at 10:00 a.m. Race will have chip timing by IAAP. This is the longest running (pun intended) 5K run celebrating Irish heritage in San Antonio, held in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. It is also one of the longest running 5K runs in the city. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Harp & Shamrock Society scholarship program, which has bestowed more than $60,000 in academic and cultural scholarships to San Antonio students. Underwritten by GLI (Guinness), Main Street Pizza and Run Wild Sports. Register before March 1 at discounted price of $25, with the discount code shamrock. Online or race-day registration available. The Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas has been “Keeping Irish History and Culture Alive” in central Texas for more than 50 years through music, arts, dance, sports and food. The Irish role in history is remembered and honored through many events, from the only St. Patrick’s Day River Parade in the world to the wreath-laying at the Alamo honoring the 35 Irish descendants who fought there.
