National Museum of Funeral History
Houston, Texas

Founded in 1992, The Museum of Funeral History chronicles funeral history from the Pharaohs to Popes. With over 30,500 square feet of exhibition space the Museum is the largest educational center on funeral heritage in the world and is internationally recognized as the largest collector of funeral memorabilia.

Exhibits at the museum include: a Presidential exhibit featuring a miniature replica of Abraham Lincoln's funeral train as well as artifacts from the funerals of former presidents including Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford; more than a dozen hearses, from horse-drawn carriages to the 1973 Mercedes-Benz used by Princess Grace of Monaco; an impressive collection of colorful coffins designed by Ghanaian sculptor Kane Quaye; the world's first papal exhibit outside of the Vatican. Celebrating The Lives And Deaths of the Popes is a 5,000 square foot exhibit commemorating the rituals by which popes have been elected and buried over the last 2,000 years. The exhibit includes an authentic, full-scale replica of Pope John Paul II's crypt as well as actual vestments worn by the pontiff.

The Museum tastefully addresses a difficult topic with interesting facts, amusing anecdotes and respectful humor. It is an adventure that visitors report to be "more fun than expected" and one they are "happy they did not miss." A must see when visiting Houston, you will be amazed by the exhibits, entertained by the stories and very pleased that you invested the time to experience this one-of-a-kind collection.
