Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge
Covering more than 44,000 acres of coastal terrain that includes the convergence of salt-water tides and fresh-water rivers, prairies, and woody thickets, the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge is an example of the biodiversity of the Gulf Coast. It’s also home to a stunning array of native and migratory birds, reptiles, mammals, and marine life. Experience this incredible refuge for yourself as you explore the miles of hiking and driving trails that cover thousands of acres, waterfowl hunting, and fishing. Designated as an Internationally Significant Shorebird Site by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, it’s a hotspot for bird watching enthusiasts.

Freeport Golf Course
Blue skies overhead, palm trees swaying in the breeze along a flat verdant fairway, and the flowing waters of the Brazos River within eyesight. You must be at Freeport Golf Course, an 18-hole municipal course featuring an open, straightforward layout with strategically placed water hazards and bunkers. Multiple tee boxes on each hole make it playable for golfers of all skill levels. Tee times are available on the course’s website.

Lake Jackson Historical Museum
Interactive exhibits and high-tech displays recount four eras of Lake Jackson’s history, starting with the Karankawa era up to the modern day. Learn about the plantations that once thrived in this section of the Texas Gulf Coast, and then discover the origins of the region’s petrochemical industry. The museum incudes the ruins of the Jackson Plantation, a former 6,400-acre sugar plantation founded in 1842. Explore Lake Jackson’s history at the historical museum Tuesday through Saturday during standard business hours.

Mammoth Lake Scuba Park
Strap on your scuba diving gear and hop into the refreshingly cool waters of the Mammoth Lake Scuba Park, the largest scuba diving lake in Texas. Explore an underwater world of awe-inspiring surprises as you encounter more than 70 submerged wrecks, such as a C-130 cargo plane, fire trucks, and even a few parts of Houston’s famous theme park: AstroWorld. Kayaking and swimming are popular activities for non-scuba divers at the lake, a well-known training venue for triathletes. All divers must be certified, and gear is available for rent at the diving shop.

San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge
Stretching out over 54,000 acres of old growth forests, freshwater marshes, and coastal prairie, the San Bernard National Wilidife Refuge provides an important home for a stunning range of wildlife. Visit any time of the year and you may encounter some of the more than 320 species of native and migratory birds, as well as countless other animals. See it all from the wildlife watching and nature trails, or go hunting or fishing (permit required for both activities). The refuge is open 365 days a year during daylight hours.

Sea Center Texas
Get up close and personal with the Texas Gulf Coast's native marine life at Sea Center Texas. Each of the Sea Center’s seven aquariums are designed to recreate a certain habitat found in the region. The centerpiece is the 50,000-gallon Offshore Gulf of Mexico Aquarium, home to such animals as bonnethead sharks, gray snappers, and green moray eels. A Texas Parks & Wildlife Marine Hatchery is also part of the Sea Center, tours of which are available by reservation Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Surfside Jetty Park
Cast a fishing line from the jetty, relax on the sandy beach, or kick back and watch the ships cruise by at this 15-acre day use park located at the mouth of the Freeport shipping channel. A free public boat ramp, playground, and restroom facilities are available at the park, a popular destination for bird and wildlife watchers and beachcombers.

The Brazosport Center for the Arts & Sciences
Theatrical performances, art exhibits, and special shows in the planetarium can be found at The Brazosport Center for the Arts & Sciences, a cultural and educational facility in Clute. The center is composed of an art gallery, a science museum home to the largest collection of seashells in the south, and two professional theaters that put on major productions throughout the year.

Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site
Relive the earliest days of Texas when you visit the Varner-Hogg Plantation. Founded by Stephen F. Austin colonist Martin Varner and formerly owned by Texas Governor James S. Hogg, the stately plantation is a living piece of history. Surrounded by pecan orchards and magnolia trees, the home features period furniture and exhibits of historically significant items owned by Governor Hogg’s daughter Ima Hogg.

Beaches in Brazosport

Bryan Beach
Camp under the clear night sky, build a sandcastle, and hit the waves at this natural beach in Freeport. Since it’s still in its natural state, you’ll need to purchase any drinks, food, or other items before arriving at the beach.

Surfside Beach
As far as beachside Texas destinations go, it’s hard to beat Surfside Beach. With miles of golden sand and a calm surf, this beach is a hotspot for swimmers, sunbathers, and novice surfers. Lined by beach house rentals, motels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, there are plenty of things to do away from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Quintana Beach County Park
Covering 51 acres of scenic beachfront terrain, Quintana Beach County Park features primitive camping and full-service RV sites, a lighted fishing pier, and access to a fishing jetty that extends one mile into the gulf. Picnic tables, a playground, a volleyball court, and a paved trail are a few of the other accommodations within the park.
