Paint the Town
April 29 - May 5, 2018
With its pristine lakes, rolling hills blanketed with blooming wildflowers, and the majestic Colorado River, the Hill Country is famous for its natural beauty.
Where better to have one of the largest juried plein air exhibitions in Texas?
That’s exactly what you’ll get at Paint the Town in Marble Falls, an annual event that attracts 40 plein air artists from across the country.
For one week in late April and early May, watch these artists painting at various area locations, purchase some pieces for your own collection, and enjoy everything else this event has to offer.
If you’re not in the know, plein air painting is the act of leaving the art studio and painting outdoors. Practiced by such world-renowned painters as Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, en plein air artists directly observe the environment they are painting.
During Paint the Town, you’ll see dozens of expert artists painting lakeside and other locations like Historic Main Street, Candlelight Ranch and the lower deck of River City Grille, just to name a few. Better yet, you’ll even have the chance to create your own works of art at the Quick Draw competition Saturday.
Along with these sessions, Paint the Town includes a demonstration and lecture by the PTT 2018 Judge, nationally-known plein air artist Suzie Baker. Add to that sunrise and nocturne painting, a student competition, and an expansive exhibiting and sales gallery and you have a week full of art and art activities. While much of Paint the Town can be experienced for free, the best way to get the most out of it is by purchasing a Palette Pass. With the pass in hand, you’ll have access to the artists’ reception on the opening day and early admission to the gallery sales event at Lakeside Pavilion Friday night, as well as complimentary lunches with the artists during the week.
All the fun culminates on the final Saturday with the Paint the Town Gallery’s Open House, held throughout the day at the Lakeside Pavilion. This open-to-the-public arts extravaganza features art sales and demonstrations, food and drink available for purchase, and a Quick Draw in downtown Marble Falls followed by a street auction of the works created in the competition.
Whether you’re an art enthusiast, you want to try out a new (to you) style of painting, or you’re looking for an excuse to visit beautiful Marble Falls, you must check out Paint the Town.
Produced by the Highland Lakes Creative Arts, Paint the Town is just one of the organization’s two major arts events in Marble Falls. The other, Sculpture on Main, transforms the town’s Main Street into an outdoor gallery full of the works of sculptors from across the country. These installations remain for one year, so you can admire them at any time.
