V-J Day Commemoration
September 2 | 5:00 PM–9:00 PM | RSVP Required
On September 2, the National Museum of the Pacific War will host a special program commemorating the 80th anniversary of V-J Day, the day Japan formally surrendered, and World War II came to an end. The evening will begin at 5:00 PM with a soft opening of the newly renovated George H.W. Bush Gallery, offering guests an exclusive first look at reimagined exhibits that tell the story of the Pacific War in powerful new ways.
At 7:12 PM CST, the exact time the surrender was signed 80 years ago in our time zone, renowned WWII historian John Parshall will deliver a keynote address reflecting on the historical weight of that moment and the lasting significance of V-J Day. The evening will also include a heartfelt performance of the National Anthem by WWII veteran Don Graves, who recently signed a recording contract at age 100.
Guests will then enjoy a cocktail hour featuring Cece Otto, a vocalist known for her historically accurate performances of wartime-era music. The program will include tributes and opportunities for reflection as we honor those who lost their lives.
