Nocona, Texas
Nocona lies at the center of many historical, heritage and modern trails of the Texas west. It's heritage spans the history of the Spanish and Indian battle of Spanish Fort, the development of the Chisholm Trail and the Butterfield Stage Trail across Texas and the later development of the North oilfields of Texas. Founded in 1887 and named for famed Comanche Chief Pete Nocona (father of Quanah Parker), Nocona today continues many of the heritage traditions of leather goods it developed from the Chisholm Trail including the Cavenders' "Larry Mahan" signature cowboy boots and later the Nokona baseball glove. The newly opened Tales 'n' Trails Museum continues to develop the diverse historical highlights of the region including American Indian, Texas cowboy, leather goods production, ranching and agriculture, and Texas oil.
Recent revitalization efforts have produced a growing downtown entertainment venue and improved rodeo facilities, as well as improvements to the local 18-hole golf course which features an 18-hole, par 70 course, with wooded rolling hills, four small bodies of water and bent grass greens. Nocona also serves as a jumping off point for the many tourism trails through the area tracing the historical and beautiful rolling countryside including the Cross Timbers wine trail in the area which includes wineries for tasting and touring within 8 miles of Nocona. Bikers come from all over to ride the motorcycle trails, including the rolling hills between St Jo and Nocona. No matter what the season Hwy 677 is a sight not to miss whether on motorcycle or in your car.
