Terrell

Friendly, welcoming, and full of things to do, Terrell is a favorite North Texas destination located just 40 minutes east of Dallas. Founded in the 1870s as a depot town along the Texas and Pacific Railway, Terrell became a thriving commercial hub back in the days when cotton was king. Wealthy growers and merchants made Terrell their home, and today, the city is known for its historic sites, a vibrant downtown and a multitude of events and activities.

A cornerstone of Terrell is its historic downtown, where brick-lined sidewalks lead visitors past storefronts trimmed with timeless architectural details. Wayfinding kiosks guide newcomers to all the area has to offer. Shop for a gift, a new outfit or something for the home, or even find an out-of-print book. Enjoy global or local cuisine in a restaurant or café and sip a draft beer or craft cocktail in a lively bar. Take part in an annual festival or parade along downtown’s bustling streets, and don’t miss the many hand-painted murals throughout the area, each revealing part of Terrell’s history.

Spending time outdoors is a big part of the Terrell experience. The 100-acre Ben Gill Park features softball and baseball complexes, lighted tennis courts, sand volleyball, an Olympic-size swimming pool, water slides, a kiddie pool, a pavilion, gazebo, hiking trail and a 2.5-acre lake. Less than 20 minutes away, Lake Tawakoni State Park provides a natural respite where visitors fish, hike, bike, swim, geocache and birdwatch.

Terrell is also home to the site of the No. 1 British Flying Training School, where more than 2,200 Royal Air Force cadets and U.S. Army Air Corps earned their wings to support the Allied Forces. Learn more about the significance of the school at the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum on the very grounds where airmen once trained.

Terrell is the hometown of Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, who grew up as Eric Bishop, and the late Randy Snow, a national and international Paralympic champion who medaled in tennis, basketball and track and was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.

Charming and authentic, friendly Terrell is the perfect place to shop, enjoy a great meal and unwind from the hustle and bustle.
