South Padre Island

Perched on the southern end of the world’s longest barrier island, experience paradise on South Padre Island, the widest, cleanest beach in Texas. The island is the ideal place to savor miles of pristine white, sandy beaches, crystal-clear water, and sunny weather year-round.

A veritable outdoor playground, South Padre Island boasts an endless number of ways to enjoy a day out on the beach, as well as a diverse selection beachside and bayside dining spots, a sprawling waterpark, local fan-favorite shops, eco-tourism sites and more.

This all adds up to a one-of-a-kind Texas beach getaway that is just as ideal for family vacationers as it is for thrill-seeking adventurers.

South Padre Island is abundant in outdoor activities. Catch a wave at Isla Blanca Park or hook a trophy marlin with one of the local fishing guides. Build a small-scale model of your dream home on the beach with Sandcastle lessons, or play a round at one of the Rio Grande Valley’s best golf courses, South Padre Island Golf Club. Better yet, shoot down a slide that’s four stories tall and float down a lazy river at Schlitterbahn South Padre Island, a family-friendly waterpark full of thrill rides and fun for everyone.

For a slower pace, take it easy, sit back and enjoy the views of the spectacular wildlife that call the island their home. A dolphin tour, such as those with The Original Dolphin Watch, will take you out on the water and get you up close and personal with these incredible creatures. While you might be lucky enough to see a massive sea turtle on a tour, you’re guaranteed to find them at Sea Turtle, Inc., a non-profit organization that has been rescuing and protecting marine turtles on the Island for more than 30 years. The organization assists the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in patrolling the Island’s beaches to look for and protect nesting turtles. Lastly, don’t miss the premier birding opportunities at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center and the Laguna Madre Nature Trail.

For food and drink connoisseurs, the island is home to more than 50 restaurants and bars that reside within 30 square miles to keep visitors full and satisfied with Texas Gulf Coast bites, sips and hospitality. Clayton’s Beach Bar, a local favorite, hosts live music events and the some of the best views of beach and bayside fireworks around. New favorites in town include The Painted Marlin – a waterfront restaurant and bar – and Palm Street Pier Bar and Grille – the perfect place to grab a signature drink and watch the evening bayside fireworks show.

As for local events, Clayton’s also hosts an after party for the island’s annual Jailbreak Beach Escape, a challenging 5K run over more than 20 crazy, sandy, and wet obstacles. In April and October, South Padre Island hosts Splash South Padre, an annual, weekend-long LGBT event. Further, it hosts weekly Farmer’s Markets, sand crab races and summertime fireworks shows – beach and bayside - to give visitors a unique experience with every visit.

Don’t wait another minute to experience the crown jewel of Texas beaches, and plan your next vacation to South Padre Island to discover all the fun and variety the island has to offer!
