The Caverns of Sonora
The Caverns of Sonora
Located at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and Highway 277 makes our community very accessible & convenient for that perfect weekend getaway. Friendly small town atmosphere with beautiful scenery, giant oak trees, 5 motels, 2 RV campgrounds, a ranch retreat, many wonderful restaurants, fast food, unique shops, an art gallery, museums and exhibits can all be found in our wonderful community.

A Texas Main Street City, Sonora is the home of The Caverns of Sonora touted by cave experts as "the most indescribably beautiful cavern in the world. Its beauty cannot be exaggerated, even by Texans".

Within the city limits, you can explore the Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary which features hiking trails, birding, native wildlife & flora, picnic areas, star gazing, geological interest and Native American History. Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at no charge.

Sonora Downtown Historic Walking Tour is a self-guided tour featuring the Sutton County Courthouse, Miers Home Museum, Old County Jail, Old Santa Fe Depot, the Will Carver Shooting Site, and eleven more points of historic interest. Also located in downtown, you can visit the Veterans of All Wars Exhibit, in the historic Mercantile Building. The Devils River State Natural Area on the picturesque Devils River is located South of Sonora off Highway 277.

Major annual events include Sutton County Days & Sonora Outlaw Pro Rodeo, held at the Sutton County Park and Arena Complex the third weekend each August; Cinco de Mayo Celebration, held each year on the weekend closest to May 5th.

Sonora is known for one of the oldest and largest game dinners, the Sutton County Game Dinner is held at the Sutton County Civic Center, the second Saturday of November, as it has been for 37 years, with over $30,000.00 in door prizes. The West Texas Championship Cook-Off is held annually during the first weekend in June, and features top cooks from all over Texas.

With an event filled calendar, western history, friendly people, and Texas Hospitality you can see why people "Always Come Back" to Sonora.
