Members of Borealis Brass are University of Alaska Fairbanks faculty Dr. Karen Gustafson, trumpet; Jane Aspnes, horn; and Dr. James Bicigo, trombone, who perform as soloists and with ensembles in North America, Europe and Asia. Borealis Brass has commissioned new works from over 40 composers and performed in Italy, Japan, Puerto Rico and across the United States. For the Rio Grande Valley concerts, the featured work will be a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass,” arranged and conducted by Gordon Hallberg, former trombonist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This piece will use an expanded ensemble consisting of top brass and percussionists from the Valley performing together with their Alaskan colleagues.
