Sunset at Memorial Park

May 29, 2017

The City of Plano will remember the military men and women who gave their lives in combat for our freedom with a sunset ceremony on Memorial Day at the beautiful Plano Veterans Memorial inside Memorial Park Beginning with a Sunset Motorcycle Ride which begins at the Plano American Legion on Ave J, upon their arrival they will be led by the bagpiper accompanied with drums each carrying a flag representing the 42 Plano veterans who died in service. The Civil Air Patrol Cadets will lead in Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance by our Plano East JROTC. As the Plano Civic Chorus sings our National Anthem, a single engine plane will fly over the Memorial Park. Our Master of Ceremonies Retired Air Force Colonel Joe Cordina will introduce our service members from World War II to our current conflict as well as those family members of our service members in the audience. After our honored guest speaker Jane Steindham Skinner, sister of Plano’s only Medal of Honor recipient Army Lt. Russell Steindham, there will be a reading of the names of these Plano Killed in Action by veterans, followed by a 21-gun salute fired by the Plano Police Honor Guard. Taps will be played by two Buglers’ Across America members to give an echo effect. Gather with us as we remember the military men and women who gave their lives in combat for our freedom at Sunset at Memorial Park. It is recommended that visitors bring a chair or blanket for the 45-minute program. Parking is available at Schimelpfenig Library and the Plano Chinese Alliance Church. Refreshments consisting of lemonade, water and cookies will be served by the Connor Harrington Women’s Group after the ceremony. Sunset at Memorial Park is presented by Strengthening Families of North Texas, American Legion Harding-Blaine Post 321, Casey Joyce All-America VFW Post 4380 and DFW Blue Star Mothers Lone Star Chapter 6.
