Horsehead Crossing Trails of Time

Oct 28, 2022 - Oct 29, 2022

The third annual Horsehead Crossing Trails of Time Living History Event October 28-29 at historic Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos River. Re-enactors, chuckwagons and artillery batteries from Fort Stockton, Waco, Midland and Brownwood will be on hand to lend an air of authenticity to the weekend, while several chuckwagon crews will serve all visitors some real “cowboy chow.” The event will be held to commemorate the various historical figures who passed over this well-known crossing throughout the 16th-19th centuries, including the Conquistadors, the Comanche War Trail, the Emigrant Trail, the Butterfield Overland Stage and the Goodnight-Loving Trail, which was made famous by Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove. “I continue to argue that Horsehead Crossing is the second-most iconic landmark in Texas history, next only to the Alamo,” says Pecos County Historical Commission Secretary Kirby Warnock. “This spot has seen the Butterfield Overland Mail, the wagon trains headed to California and the very first cattle drive pass over this ground.” Historian Tom Ashmore will once again lead presentations on the history of the site while Kevin Williams will sign up chuckwagons. Wanda Lewis will gather items for a silent auction to benefit the Goodnight-Loving Trail Foundation and there will also be trail rides led by Shanna Wolf and Warren Oakley. Horsehead Crossing is located on the Pecos River, off of FM 11, between the communities of Imperial and Girvin. A large, metal sign on FM 11 will direct you to the site.
