South Llano River State Park offers miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, swimming, fishing, mountain biking, birding, a nature study, and a protected Rio Grande Turkey nesting habitat. Observation blinds are available so bring your camera and binoculars.
Trails lead into the adjoining Walter Buck Wildlife Management Area where more hiking, biking, and wildlife blinds can be enjoyed. Birders may see Zone Tail Hawk, Black-capped Vireo, Painted Bunting, Vermilion Flycatcher, Black-throated and Rufous-crowned sparrows or any of the 249 bird species that have been documented in the area.
For water enthusiasts, seasonal canoe and tube rentals are available. For fishermen, catfish, bass and perch are found in the clear, shallow waters of the Llano Rivers, which are also stocked with Rainbow Trout during the colder months. You might even want to experience the Oktoberfisch Fly Fishing Festival.
Cyclists and bikers can explore the back roads and soak up the serenity or join the fun during our Tour de Forts bicycle ride or numerous motorcycle rallies held throughout the year.
Golfers will enjoy the scenic 9-hole golf course and rodeo lovers can kick it up at the Twist Off Rodeo in May, Summer Classic Rodeo in August, and Kimble Kounty Kow Kick Youth Rodeo in September.
For a view into the past, Kimble County Historical Museum and nearby Fort McKavett State Historic Site offer unique historical perspectives. And, be sure to join us for the 58th Annual Easter Pageant held under the stars at the amphitheater below Lover's Leap. More than 70 actors will portray the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the Saturday before Easter. For more drama, be sure to catch the Backstreet Players who put on live theater productions twice a year. Additional events are held throughout the year.
