Arts & Culture

• In 2016 Fiesta® will mark its 125th Anniversary. This is San Antonio’s chance to showcase Fiesta® to the nation.  Fiesta® is a unique fusion of traditions, arts and culture.  As one of the few city-wide cultural festivals in the United States, we have something special to celebrate. Let’s plan to make a big splash!

Safety and Environment
• Fiesta Safe Rides® is a program that promotes being safe during Fiesta® and planning ahead in obtaining a designated driver or safe way home. Through partnerships with the Texas Department of Transportation, Silver Eagle, Valero, the City of San Antonio Police Department and Yellow Cab, Fiesta Safe Rides® has distributed taxi vouchers or gift cards in order for individuals to ensure a safe way to and from a Fiesta® event.

Additionally, every year the VIA Metropolitan Transit offers their Park and Ride service to many Fiesta® events. Park and Ride locations span the city and are offered at discounted, affordable rates. In 2013, Park and Ride provided a safe ride home for 24,000 Fiesta®-goers.

 • Fiesta Verde® is the green initiative of the Fiesta® San Antonio Commission.  The Fiesta® Commission Charitable Corporation works with partners including Keep San Antonio Beautiful and the City of San Antonio to promote an environmentally friendly festival.

Fiesta Verde® implemented a plan in 2012 to increase trash collection and recycling along the parade route. Today, more 700 containers, split between trash and recycling, are located along the parade route and cross streets; City of San Antonio Eco Station signage is located at each collection of containers; and yellow recycling bags are distributed to spectators along the parade route. In 2013, the recycling rate for the parade routes increased to 31%.

• Fiesta Fit® is the Fiesta® San Antonio Commission’s wellness platform and will include programs to inform festival goers on healthy food options and how to remain fit throughout the year.  Miss Fiesta® San Antonio 2013 centered her platform around preventative Health Care and Fitness and as part of her platform, hosted two public Health Fairs. San Antonio is currently ranked among the highest American cities for rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, and Miss Fiesta® San Antonio, acting as a spokesperson for the Fiesta® Commission Charitable Corporation, has created public access to screenings, education and community resources through these series of local Health Fairs.

History and Heritage
• The Military Ambassador program is unique to any festival in the world.  A male and female ambassador is chosen for each branch of service and those individuals are escorted throughout Fiesta® and Military City USA to promote the armed services.  These ambassadors are chosen through a rigorous application and interview process. In 2013, the Fiesta® Commission Charitable Corporation created a fund to help offset the costs of this important program, which was affected by cuts due to sequestration.  This has allowed the Charitable Corporation to set a course to ensure the continuation of celebrating the armed services.

Education
• The Miss Fiesta San Antonio® program is an educational, year-long internship. This program selects an accomplished young woman to develop a platform that highlights and promotes the charitable, educational or cultural objectives of the Fiesta® Commission Charitable Corporation.  Part of the interview process is for the applicant to devise a project around one of the program areas of the Fiesta® Commission Charitable Corporation, and then completed during her reign.
