Black Jack’s Crossing Golf Course

From the verdant fairways winding through rugged desert valleys to the breathtaking mountains that are always in view, there’s nothing like the 18-hole Black Jack’s Crossing golf course. Nestled just north of the Rio Grande River between the Chisos Mountains in Texas and Mexico’s Sierra Madre Oriental, Black Jack’s Crossing is as remote as it is beautiful.

Play through the Lajitas golf course and you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a series of vibrant landscape paintings. Named after U.S. Army General “Black Jack” Pershing who pursued Pancho Villa across the Rio Grande, Black Jack’s Crossing is not just a world-class golf course; it’s a bucket list-worthy experience all its own.

Black Jack’s Crossing is one of the main attractions at the Lajitas Golf Resort, a 27,000-acre getaway in Big Bend that offers rustic charm and a stunning array of things to do. Yet the golf alone is more than worth the trip. Ranked as the No. 1 “Best Golf Course You Can Play in Texas” by the Dallas Morning News, and among the top in the state by Golf Magazine and Golfweek, the course has received more than its fair share of accolades.

Along with its breathtaking scenery, the layout designed by World Golf Hall of Fame-inductee Lanny Wadkins offers a playing experience that is both forgiving and challenging. Four sets of tee boxes make each hole playable for novice and advanced players alike, while the wide fairways offer plenty of space to aim for.

Stretching as far as 7,413 yards, the par-72 course tests your long and short game with elevated tees, elevation changes, and strategically located bunkers. At times you’ll need to hold your nerve as you aim over arroyos; one misplaced drive or chip and you could be back a stroke. You’ll need to be just as diligent once you land on the fast-playing greens that feature great undulation.

Throughout your round, you’ll play through the valley, climb high into the mountains, and be within sight of the majestic Rio Grande River. Conquering the course is an achievement by itself, but the views you’ll enjoy will take your breath away.
