A Century of Fine Art in the Big Bend: SRSU Faculty and Students
April 16 - May 29, 2021

Since 1921, a year after Sul Ross Normal opened its doors to students, art has been an integral part of the school’s curriculum. Begun as the Department of Drawing this humble department metamorphosed into the vibrant and dynamic Art Department of today.  The Art Department at Sul Ross State Teacher’s College created an Art Colony in 1932 by inviting guest artists and students to the high desert to challenge themselves in an unfamiliar landscape.  Up until 1950, the Art Colony was a successful and popular summer course. A Century of Fine Art in the Big Bend will examine the faculty and students who came to the Big Bend and how this region influenced their work.
