Most visitors know Austin for live music, breakfast tacos, and Richard Linklater. What they don't know is that on April 7, 1900, one of the largest dams in North America collapsed beneath the raging Colorado River, sending a wall of water through the city that wreaked havoc on the city's people and infrastructure. The Great Granite Dam—60 feet high, 1,200 feet across, and the centerpiece of the city's plan to become a Southern industrial powerhouse—was gone in minutes. It's one of the most dramatic chapters in Texas history, and one that's largely been forgotten...until now.

The Dam Good Tour tells the whole story. This 90-minute bus tour, operated by the locally owned team behind Austin Ghost Tours, traces the full arc of the disaster: the city's ambitious gamble on hydroelectric power in the 1890s, the massive granite dam's construction, and the catastrophic Saturday morning when the river went wild. Riders sit back in a climate-controlled bus outfitted with eight speakers and two subwoofers, which elevates the tour from your usual murky PA-system experience to a surround-sound experience bordering on cinematic. You're not just listening to a guide; you're hearing the storm build around you.

The tour departs from the front porch of Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill in downtown Austin and covers the key landmarks connected to the dam's rise and fall. Along the way, you'll see the sites where Austin's dreams were built and where the water turned them into nightmares. In fact, more than 125 years later, you can still spot the original granite stones from the dam scattered in the water near Tom Miller Dam off Redbud Trail.

Private group tours for up to 30 people are also available. These include flexible departure points and extended run times of up to three hours, making it a great option for corporate outings, team events, birthdays, or anyone who wants the bus all to themselves.
