Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg

Texas would be a very different place today if it weren't for all the German immigrants that settled in the state in the 1800s. We wouldn't have barbecue, our strong dance hall culture, and even Tejano music would be different (shout out to you, accordion). While the German influence is with us all year-round, October is when it peaks and there's perhaps no higher peak than the Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg. 

Now in its forty-sixth year, Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg takes over Market Square and the surrounding blocks of historic downtown Fredericksburg on the first weekend of October. In 2026, that's Friday, October 2 running until October 4. While there are many different Oktoberfest celebrations across the state, Fredericksburg's ranked among USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards for Oktoberfest celebrations across the entire county. Not bad for a little town in the Hill Country. 

The Land of Beer and Sausage

When you think of Oktoberfest, the first thing that comes to mind is probably beer, sausage, and everyone dressed up like they fell out of a children's storybook. At the Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg, no short shrift is given to the food and drink selection. In addition to classic Bratwurst, there's Curry Wurst, German Burgers with Kraut, Schnitzel Plates, German Tacos, Käse Fondue with Wurst, and Apple Strudel. There will be dozens of beers on tap, including Texas Craft Beers from Altstadt, Four Corners, St. Arnold, and Real Ale, among others. They'll also be bringing special brews specifically for Oktoberfest. 

Some might say drinking a beer is fun enough, but Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg takes it a little further with the Samuel Adams Stein Hoist. This is a classic strength and endurance test where one must hold a full beer stein out in front of their bodies for as long as possible. That tired joke about doing curls while drinking beers? Here's where all those reps finally come into play. 

Five Stages and Nobody Sitting Still

The music at Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg is anything but background noise. It's woven into the fabric of the celebration—and one of the more textured parts of the fabric, we'd say. Across the festival, you'll find not one stage, not two, but five different stages all featuring authentic oompah bands, yodelers, and the finest tuba players on either side of the Mississippi. As a matter of fact, Friday opens with OkTUBAfest, a tuba ensemble that requires no further explanation. 

When you're tired of listening and ready to participate, one of the most popular traditions at Oktoberfest is the Hauptstrasse Chicken Dance. You might not realize it, but the Chicken Dance was actually created by a Swiss-German accordion player and made its way over to America in the 1980s, where it debuted at the Oktoberfest in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Chicken Dance in Fredericksburg is one of the biggest you'll ever be a part of, as it typically includes around 400 participants all strutting their feathers in unison. 

Beer and Music Are Just the Beginning

Beer and music might be the most famous part of Oktoberfest, but they're only scratching the surface. If you're bringing the entire family, you'll want to visit Kinder Park, which will have games, prizes, balloon animals, and face painting for the kiddos. You'll also find plenty of local vendors selling handmade crafts like textiles and ceramics—perfect if you're looking for a souvenir with soul. And why not pick up some authentic Lederhosen? You can pull it off. 

On top of that, there are the Kraut Run (perfect for burning off some beer), the Altstadt Waltz Contest, and a Meet & Mingle event with Sheryl Yuengling, a sixth-generation member of the Yuengling family and brewing legacy.

Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg always delivers. It's not one of those events that gets blown out of proportion by a colorful brochure. It's the real deal: a weekend-long exultation of German culture that's unlike anything else you'll experience all year.
