Recognized by Country Living as one of the Top 25 Small Town Main Streets in America, the Hill Country Mile packs—elegantly, we might add, like the suitcase of an experienced traveler—more than 80 shops and restaurants into its stretch of historic buildings.

In a world where everything is looking more and more same-y—where strip malls and chain stores are replacing mom-and-pop shops—the Hill Country Mile stands proud as a beacon of nostalgia. Not nostalgia for a simpler time, but for a slower time. A time when every dress was hand-stitched and every bouquet hand-picked. A time of warm lights and warm pastries. A time when every casual stroll led to a new discovery.

The good ol’ days may come and go, but the Hill Country Mile is always right where you left it.

Shops Worth Slowing Down For

Not every store on the Hill Country Mile gets its very own parking lot, but not every store is as big as Bechants. This two-story luxury department store carries fine jewelry, kitchenware, bedding, stationery, children’s toys, and much more. It’s the opposite of shopping online for the cheapest thing that you know will break or tear within two weeks. When you buy something at Bechants, it’s a generational purchase.

Despite its name, Fickle Pickles is one of the most consistently successful businesses on the Hill Country Mile, having expanded to four other locations since its founding in 1980. Pickle testimonies range from “the best pickles I’ve ever had” to “so good we finished the jar in a couple of days.” Fickle Pickle also happens to double as an antique store, so while the pickles are a staple, you never know what else you might find on any given day.

The worst part about Christmas is that it makes every other day of the year not Christmas. That is, unless you’re at The Christmas Shoppe, where it’s Christmas all year long! Well, during business hours, at least. Here, you can stock up on Russian Santa figures, hand-crafted European ornaments, and Department 56 Christmas villages. It’s a far higher quality selection than what you’ll find in the seasonal section of your local department store. If you’re not as interested in buying early and are more of a shop-from-the-hip type, The Christmas Shoppe also carries a big selection for whichever holiday is right around the corner.

Where to Eat on the Hill Country Mile

If you walk past Richter Bakhaus (German for “bakehouse”) while the door is open, you’re likely to be hit by the scent of their famous cinnamon rolls. If you can keep walking, you have more self-control than we do. The irresistible scent is preceded only by their reputation as the grandest cinnamon rolls in the Texas Hill Country. Just so you know, they’re huge, so you might want to assemble a posse before taking one down.

Boerne Epicure Gourmet Market isn’t just on the Hill Country Mile; it’s also at the intersection of shopping and eating. That’s because it’s the go-to spot for locals to find imported goods, small-batch pantry items, and unique gift baskets, but there’s also a seasonal selection of gelato when you need a little pick-me-up. At a separate location, aptly titled the Boerne Epicure Gourmet Delicatessen, they serve fresh sandwiches, soups, and salads. The philosophy of the deli is to emphasize thoughtful, health-conscious ingredients without compromising taste. 

As you walk down the Hill Country Mile, you might find yourself enamored with the historical buildings. Instead of being sectioned off like a museum piece behind glass, the spirit of these buildings is kept alive by active businesses. One such example is The Dienger Trading Co., a cultural cornerstone of Boerne and in a building that’s more than a century old. Located right next to the Main Plaza, Dienger contains a vintage bistro, bakery, and boutique, each of which exemplifies an old-school attention to detail.

Souvenirs You Can Use

“Souvenir” comes from the French for “to remember,” which is a lovely thing to ponder when you’re standing inside SL Permanent Jewelry and Boutique surrounded by bracelets and charms. Maybe you can’t talk yourself into needing a new sterling silver bracelet, but you can definitely talk yourself into needing a souvenir to remember your trip by. Another great spot for a souvenir with meaning is The Boerne Bookshop. A book sits nicely on your shelf, ideally with some company, and reminds you of your trip every time you catch a glimpse of its spine (or pick it up for a reread, of course). Enjoy Every Inch of the Hill Country Mile

The Hill Country Mile in Boerne is about 30 minutes from San Antonio and about 90 minutes from Austin. You may think it perfect for a day trip, but there’s so much more that we didn’t have time to cover here. Not only are you going to need more than an afternoon to get the full experience, but the Hill Country Mile is best enjoyed one way: slow.

It’s not an outdoor shopping mall where everyone is bumping into each other, racing from one store to the next, hurrying to get home in time for one self-imposed deadline or another. It’s where people go to slow down and to savor the little moments: the bites, the sips, the friendly faces, and the classic limestone architecture.

Needless to say, the Hill Country Mile isn’t a race. If anything, it’s a test of strength, given how many shopping bags you’re likely to be hauling back to your car.
